I didn’t watch the big game yesterday until about the two-minute warning in the fourth. I was enjoying my time relaxing outside (we had nice weather).
I generally watch the Super Bowl regardless of whether I have any “skin in the game” (in terms of teams I favor or teams I don’t, not in terms of betting)… but I was just… over it. MAGA really ruined it for me this year.
The Super Bowl is supposed to be about America getting together to enjoy a match between the two top-rated teams in the National Football League, with the added benefit of watching million-dollar advertisements AND seeing the nation’s water usage spike during halftime and after the game. I was never in favor of having popular recording artists perform during halftime, and now look where we are: separate halftime shows — one for smooth-brained bigots and one for mature, civilized people.
Here’s what it reminded me of: 1
Speaking of smooth-brained bigots… somebody ought to tell Ms. Loomer that Bad Bunny es puertorriqueño — and Puerto Rico is a territory of *checks notes* The United States of America. 2
It’s a wonder Loomer even bothered to capitalize “Latin.” (Should have read “Latin American” or “Latina,” by the way. An actual journalist should have known that.)
What’s grinding the gears of Loomer and the other smooth-brains is actually a business decision made by the NFL — they want to expand to markets outside of White America. Plus controversy is good for ratings. 3
Lest we forget, Kendrick Lamar performed at last year’s Super Bowl halftime show, and the smooth-brains crowed about how it was a “DEI performance”: 4
Now, on the social media platform I visit, I saw a LOT of love for Bad Bunny and the halftime show. I saw the word “love” in numerous comments — and not just “I loved the show” — more like the show was about love, or spread love. Personally, that’s exactly what I want to see when I’m scrolling. There’s so much hate and awfulness everywhere else.
I guess I don’t need politics and racism infecting my football, too. But this year, it was just too much. Talk of siccing ICE troops on the show performers and Hispanic fans in the stadium, and this dumb alternative halftime show… I’d had enough.
