In a social media post, Liz Oyer, former Pardon Attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, offered important context to a CBS News report that claimed the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division will not investigate the death of Renee Good.
Oyer explained that the Civil Rights Division is charged with prosecuting cases involving law enforcement officers are believed to have used excessive force against citizens. “According to its website,” Oyer explained, “the Civil Rights Division vigorously investigates constitutional [rights] violations by law enforcement officers…. In every case, the ultimate goal of the Criminal Section is to ensure that allegations are thoroughly and fairly investigated. ” 1
The CBS News reporting states “Leadership in the Civil Rights Division, overseen by Harmeet Dhillon, informed staff in the division’s criminal section that there would not be an investigation, two sources said.” 2
Oyer pointed out that Harmeet Dhillon is a former personal attorney for Donald Trump, and an election denier. “Under her leadership, the Civil Rights Division has not prosecuted any of the egregious misconduct by ICE agents that we have seen around the country.”
Ms. Oyer asks the public to contact their Representatives to demand the DOJ investigate Good’s death, and to ask Dhillon be investigated and removed from office.
