Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass) has called for President Trump to be removed from office via invocation of the 25th Amendment.

Markey made a social media post after news broke of a text message Trump sent to Norwegian leader Jonas Gahr Støre linking Greenland aggression to Norway’s failure to confer the Nobel Peace Prize. 1

(By the way, Greenland is a Danish territory. Not a Norwegian one.)

The 25th Amendment to the Constitution allows for the Vice President and a majority of the President’s cabinet to transmit a letter to Congress indicating the President is unable to carry out his duties. Presidential power is conferred upon the Vice President immediately.

Congress has no real role in the transaction unless the President protests the letter, in which case the House and Senate will vote to either deny or allow the transfer of power.
